Why Structured Cabling Matters for Your Business

In today's digital-first business environment, your network infrastructure is only as strong as its foundation. Structured cabling provides an organized, scalable, and high-performance foundation for all your communication needs—from data and voice to video and security systems.

Unlike point-to-point cabling that creates a tangled mess of wires, structured cablingfollows a standardized architecture that makes it easy to manage, troubleshoot, and upgrade. It's an investment in your business's future that pays dividends through reduced downtime, lower maintenance costs, and support for emerging technologies.

Structured Cabling

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is structured cabling and why is it important?

Structured cabling is a standardized approach to cabling infrastructure that supports multiple hardware uses and is suitable for today's data needs and future growth. Unlike point-to-point cabling, structured cabling provides an organized, manageable, and scalable foundation for your entire network, making it easier to troubleshoot, upgrade, and maintain. It includes six subsystems: entrance facilities, equipment rooms, backbone cabling, telecommunications rooms, horizontal cabling, and work area outlets.

What's the difference between Cat6 and Cat6A cabling?

The main difference is bandwidth and speed. Cat6 supports up to 1 Gbps at 250 MHz over 100 meters. Cat6A supports up to 10 Gbps at 500 MHz over the same distance—10x the speed. Cat6A also has better alien crosstalk protection, making it more reliable in high-density environments. For most businesses, Cat6A is recommended for future-proofing, especially if you plan to keep the cabling for 10+ years.

What is Fluke certification and why does it matter?

Fluke certification involves testing every cabling link with professional Fluke Networks DSX Series equipment to verify it meets or exceeds category specifications (Cat6, Cat6A, etc.). This provides documented proof that your cabling will perform as expected, helps identify installation issues immediately, and is often required for warranty claims. At Layerix, we provide Fluke certification reports for every project as standard.

How long does structured cabling installation take?

Installation time varies based on facility size and complexity. A typical office floor of 10,000 sq ft with 50-100 drops might take 3-5 days for complete installation and certification. Larger facilities with hundreds of drops can take several weeks. We work closely with you to schedule installation during off-hours or weekends to minimize business disruption.

What's the difference between plenum and riser cabling?

Plenum-rated cable has a fire-retardant jacket that produces minimal smoke and toxins when burned, making it required for air handling spaces (above drop ceilings, below raised floors). Riser-rated cable is for vertical runs between floors. Using the wrong cable type can violate building codes and insurance requirements. We always use the appropriate cable type for each environment.

Do you provide cabling for existing buildings (retrofit)?

Yes, we specialize in retrofitting modern cabling into existing buildings. We work during off-hours to minimize disruption and can use existing cable pathways where possible. For buildings without proper pathways, we can install new conduit, use surface raceway solutions, or employ wireless backhauls where appropriate. Our team has extensive experience with occupied building installations.
